Simple and Free SEO Strategies Every Church Should Use

Jess from SteepleMate here! Many churches assume they need to hire an expensive SEO specialist to improve their online presence. The truth is, there are simple and free steps any church can take to increase its visibility and connect with more people online. One of the most important (and easiest) things to do is claim your church’s listing on Google and Bing.

Why Owning Your Google and Bing Listings Matters

When people search for churches in their area, search engines display business listings at the top of the results. These listings include basic details like the church name, address, phone number, service times, and reviews. If your church doesn’t claim and optimize its listing, you could be missing out on opportunities to reach new visitors.

Step 1: Claim Your Google Business Profile

Simply search for your churches address online. In the business listing select, "Own this business?"

A pop-up will appear, select "Manage now". Fill out accurate information about the church, including the name, address, phone number, website, and service times.

Google typically sends a postcard with a verification code to confirm your location. Once you receive the postcard, enter the code to complete the verification process.

Finally, optimize the profile by adding photos of your church. Write a welcoming description, update church times, and encourage members to leave reviews.

Step 2: Claim Your Bing Places for Business Listing

Over the past year, Microsoft's Bing search engine has experienced modest growth in its market share. Despite Google still dominating the market, Microsoft's ecosystem drives Bing traffic. Bottom line, visibility matters.

Head to Bing.com and search for your church. If it’s already listed, claim it. If not, create a new listing.

Enter the church's information, just like with Google, add your church’s address, phone number, website, and service times. Similarly, Bing may send a verification code to confirm your location.

Other Easy SEO Strategies for Churches

Beyond claiming your listings, here are a few other free and simple ways to boost your church’s online presence:

  1. Optimize Your Website for Search Engines – Use clear titles and descriptions, and include keywords like “church in [your city].” Don't have a church website? You can get one in minutes with SteepleMate.
